John Tayloe of Loudoun County, Virginia: Lease for Lives

During the time when John Hendrickson leased land from John Tayloe, Tayloe was leasing much of his land to the east of Short Hills in Loudoun County.

These would be John Hendrickson’s neighbors and possible families that intermarried with the Hendricksons. Even though I believe John Hendrickson was out of Loudoun County by 1770, we know from tithables/tax lists that Simeon and James were still in Loudoun until 1769.

Tayloe’s land was in the western side of Loudoun, up against the Short Hills, near Hillsboro, VA. The first graphic is a horizontal map, but the actual land (second graphic) shows that it ran north-south up against the Short Hills.

The town of Waterford and the surrounding area, was where the Quakers settled, east of this parcel of Tayloe land. On the map below, the Quaker Settlement would be southeast of Purcellville. (Look on modern maps for a town called Lincoln. That’s the heart of the Quaker area.)

The town of Lovettsville was north and east of the Tayloe land, and the area surrounding Lovettsville was called the German Settlement. But when you look at the names of people leasing land from Tayloe, they appear to be either English or Scottish, not German.
